The development of digital images and techniques has significantly widened the use of photography by both fine artists and the general public, presenting new challenges for curators, conservators, museum specialists and photographers themselves. Interestingly, however, there has been a simultaneous recuperation of older processes that had previously fallen out of use in artistic work, in this way reinvigorating traditional photography.

A class from the University of Cândido Mendes Photography and Image postgraduate course that has been opened to the public.

From 1984 to 1988, the French government developed one of the 20th century’s largest photography projects through an agency known as DATAR and based on models created by the Farm Security Administration in the United States. Since then, a range of other projects has followed on from this experience. These include the France 14 and Oubliés dans nos campagnes projects by the group MYOP, and France Territoire(s) liquide and La France VUE D‘ICI, presented by journalist Christine Coste and edited by Journal des Arts and L’Oeil magazine in Paris.

During this meeting, each participant will construct a portable camera obscura. They will then use these to visualize and understand how images are formed within our eyes and inside cameras. This game will introduce them to the main principles behind the formation of images.

Coordinated by Milton Guran, this seminar brings together historians, curators and artists to discuss the construction of new a language through the renovation of old technical processes for use in digital photography, such as solarisation, high-contrast, infrared and collage, among others.
